Is Your Job Protected if You Need to Go to Rehab?

When it becomes clear that there is a problem with drug or alcohol abuse and that there might be an addiction for which you need professional help to overcome, your job security can be a concern. Fear of losing your job can be a barrier to addiction treatment at rehab but the truth is that your job can be protected while you go to rehab.

The Union First employee assistance program offers several key services including job protection. We ensure that the advantages that the law provides you are enforced, allowing you to go to rehab for a period – even inpatient treatment that takes you away from your work for a time.

To get job protection while receiving treatment at a rehab, you need to follow the formal FMLA process. It allows you to take a leave of absence from work without losing your job. Union First helps its members to go through the proper channels so that the FMLA protections can be utilized to protect your job while getting behavioral health and addiction treatment.

Rehab Options for Working People

Union First can help you to get 12 weeks of unpaid leave from your job, allowing you to return to work after you’ve gone through rehab. Rehab treatment can take at least 3 months to complete in a comprehensive treatment program that includes medical detox, inpatient rehab, outpatient rehab, and aftercare programs.

Inpatient rehab is the most intensive form of treatment available at addiction treatment centers. It takes you out of uncontrollable situations and helps you through daily treatments in a supportive environment. Of course, it offers no flexibility as you will need to stay at the rehab center for the 30, 60, or 90 days that an average program lasts. For severe addiction with a high risk of relapse during the early stages of recovery, inpatient or residential rehab is the best option.

Outpatient rehab is more flexible. Intensive outpatient programs (IOP), general outpatient programs (GOP), and partial hospitalization programs (PHP) all offer you more autonomy so if you need to carry on working, then outpatient rehab can allow for that.

A comprehensive addiction treatment program usually involves both inpatient and outpatient rehab. You can start with inpatient rehab and then transition into outpatient treatment so that you can go back to work while still getting the professional care that you need to overcome addiction.
